This volume contains three reports by Swedish mining officials dating from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The earliest, by Carl Fredrik Schulzen (1797), examines the Eidsvoll gold and copper works in Norway and discusses mining, amalgamation and copper smelting. Daniel Flodström's extensive account of Røros and central Norway (1821–1823) combines technical descriptions of mining and metallurgy with observations on labour, administration, forestry, transport, settlement and rural society. The final report, by B.G. Bredberg and C.E. Sjögren, surveys the mining and industrial districts of Upper Silesia during the 1820s, including coal mining, coke smelting, iron production, zinc manufacture, lead metallurgy and steam-powered industry. Together the texts illustrate the changing character of Swedish mining travel and technical reporting during the decades around 1800. Whereas earlier Bergskollegium travellers focused primarily on mines and metallurgical processes, the authors represented here increasingly examined mining as part of larger economic and industrial systems. The volume therefore provides valuable perspectives on Scandinavian mining enterprises, Norwegian resource frontiers, and the emergence of modern industrial production in Central Europe.
